Though despite this there is an evident void in my life since revision has not been occupying my day. Not only have I found this gap but also amongst my peers. This then begged the question to me, is there a serious issue with education? After studying for X amount of months my peers and I have noticed now we crave for mental stimulation that exams present us. I think it would be the wrong suggestion for more exams; there are plenty to keep people occupied already. However, I see people want to have a wider interest in a subject or an issue. Young people crave that extra amount of information especially if it is not on the syllabus. Possibly the best way to get information from students is not grilling them to succeed in a memory test, but rather present well rounded individuals who have a interest in something through some sort of research and essay task.

Coursework by many has been frowned upon for the possibility of cheating. However, I feel if the students are picking the topics or directing their life they are more likely to take personal interest and ownership of their study. Furthermore, this is something that universities are crying out for from undergraduates. They want students that are motivated, and wish to expand their mind. Therefore, is it not wise to start this process at school? Creating well rounded students and not just those who can retain information for an exam. In addition I feel that people retain information for a longer period of time if they have an interest in something, rather than generic revision, which strives not to have an interested in a topic but rather just to find the easiest route to an A grade.

It looks like the political stories will start to build up again. With a Parliamentary reshuffle as well as Mitt Romney not looking particularly ready to beat President Obama. The following weeks are looking good for some stories and some changes to things as we know it.

September is upon us and i am back to to bring the quick analysis of news stories from the week and avoid the jargon that goes along with it.
As always Joshua GentryAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10570536049673669898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4920652037009469396.post-21235405534053503222012-06-17T20:57:00.002+01:002012-06-17T20:57:28.861+01:00A Good HeartThis week i was truly taken back from the success of the Martha Payne's blog. Her use of media to rate her school meals was scrutinised and momentarily banned earlier in the week. This was due to worries from cooking staff that they may lose there jobs after a story published in a paper. Thankfully this ban was dropped.
Though despite the discussions of the ability to censor information or ban taking pictures of food, what has been promising is the increase in cash from the public donated to her charity. This was to provide money for school food projects in Malawi. There was an increase to £73,000 on Sunday.
Raising money for charity and the public embracing a cause despite the tough times.
However a chance for yourselves to be involved in this. I am writing a short project on the legitimacy on political power, and i wanted to have some tailored data to accompany parts of this.
So if you have a minute or two please could you answer as well, there are only 5 questions. Once all the data is collected then i shall publish it here and possibly along side this project.
His Drones have been out again this week. This time trying to take out 'Abu Yahya al-Libi' al-Qaeda's second in command. These attacks are being heavily scrutinised and rightly so after a receiving the Nobel peace prize. It is unclear whether or not these attacks are legal, Pakistan's foreign ministry called the most recent strike 'illegal'. As far as i see these strikes are in order to protect individuals against terrorism though these suspected terrorists are being killed without trial. The 6th amendment says 'In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favour, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.'.

The real question is this process legal or does the constitution regarding a fair trial only effect US citizens. It is important to protect against terror, but is it right to lose track of civil liberties and freedoms. I feel that Obama is looking at the interests of his citizens though i think there needs to be a closer watch on whether he is overstepping his powers as president, and also to see if this action is constitutional.
Green go. Food producers are being asked to label their foods clearly. Well lets be honest that would be a miracle if that was to happen. Though it seems it would be most appropriate to have one system over all foods so you could compare if that interested you, or if you could be bothered to do such a dull task while quickly popping into your supermarket.

I feel that food labelling obviously has some benefits in theory, but it has so many issues. Not many people pay attention to it (that is not a call to make it bigger on the packaging), it actually often tells you vary little. Many individuals now see salt as being a bad product as well as sugars, well in fact they are important to your diet its all about eating a balanced diet. If you look in the past there was not an obesity problem neither was there food labels, peoples cooked properly for themselves and applied some common sense.

The thing that is quite strange is how packaging labels sugars which are natural as negative however what are the effects of the products and additives that are replacing them, are these worse for you should there be a limit of how much we have of these man-made alternatives. Often i feel that what is naturally occurring tends to be better for you rather than something man has created after all that could have unforeseen flaws in it.

Over i feel food labelling is a good idea if it was constant across all brands. Though at the end of the day if your comparing the salt amount in you ready meals i hardly doubt you should be concentrating on the difference between the two products and rather should find some natural products and cook for yourself at least that way you can add as little or as much of these ingredients.
George Osborne also saying to 'focus 100%' of attention on the economy this week. The coalition seems to realise that this was going to be harder than they planed. I feel George Osborne was right regarding attention to the economy, seeing as the economy at the moment is determining public opinion on parties at the moment. There is large political apathy over voting in the UK and during the recent referendums on elected mayors there was only 24% turnout in Manchester and Nottingham.

Despite all of this David Cameron is pushing forward with his drug driving law. The negative economic figures and now a double dip recession, has not been helped by the inquiries into Murdoch's connection to the government and his possible undue power over policy and also the government and media. This recent possible slander in the government is not good for public image, especially after Mr Cameron and Mr Clegg was recently called "two arrogant posh boys" however i feel it is important to realise in the grand scale of the things around the world the UK rarely suffers scandal in the headlines and this is why such an event has made so much of an impact in the Press recently.
With the recent news of Cameron backing the House of Lords reform. Is this another step to a more liberal conservative outlook? Well the coalition is pushing Mr Cameron in this new direction, though does he himself also feel that its time to start reforming things, leaving behind the traditional conservative pragmatic routes. Though the main question is will his party follow him or has this been one liberal step to far? In the recent Backbench Business committee it is said that only one conservative MP backed the idea of a Lords reform. This might be partly behind why if the vote goes ahead it will be a free vote (if there ever truly was one in the commons). There is always the chance hat reformed house of lords could result in a loss of skills and something that exactly mirrors the commons creating deadlock and a party ruled upper chamber, and seeing as the Lords currently defeats the government more, is it right to change it to favour the few.
But the changes are not just cosmetic, the blog now also will only contain politics ( i may however create a separate music blog). Hopefully i will be posting more frequently soon and also livening up the page a bit more instead of just text. I would like to quickly thank Creative Lynx for some simple ideas and most noticeably Claire Knapp.

I hope you enjoy the changes, and if you have any ideas fell free to comment.

In the News, the country is looking forward to seeing the Chancellors budget next Wednesday. Though for me i think the main story in the news is only being hinted at with, lots of different arguments over gay marriage in the UK, i think the real question that is being asked under all this is if the UK should continue to have a state religion.

After many modern democracies across the world have removed state religion, is Britain next to follow suit? France recently have banned signs of faiths in public. Though are we about to witness the same here in the UK, and if so is it right to lose certain traditions.

In my opinion, the country was built on a set of morals that have stood the country in good stead for hundreds of years, is it right that we can think we have the right answer to improve something that works, which i feel partly makes the UK stand out on the world stage.

Tradition is something this country has and makes us stand out against the world, our culture is something we should be proud, i know this view is slightly pragmatic in not wanting a change, though i believe in this case it should remain, other religions work in the country as well and respect is built between them.

Losing this part of tradition could lead to other aspects of the UK and its constitution being watered down and reformed, and are we as a country ready to reform our way of life for ever without knowing the full consequences.

Thank you and i shall write soon.

It should be interesting to see the changes to both political and economic life over the next few months. Music should also be something to watch out for the invention of new genres, and some unforgettable songs to be written.

For me my year is starting particularly busy with an economics module now out of the way, and a constant learning of musical repertoire in time for a New York tour, with a choir should kick some energy into the new year.

I hope this year is an eventful one, interesting, exiting and most of all one that we can all look back on and remember.
While out with friends it became clear to me how busy the shopping centre was. I don't need to explain the boxing day sales to anyone, really as we all have heard of them though this year it made me think of something slightly larger and that being the economic climate in which we live. It appeared to me regardless of the time moving into early evening, on how full the place was (despite the economic downturn). It partly made we question the extent of the downturn, seeing as most of the consumers had most likely spent a large sum of money on Christmas, why were they so compelled to spend so quickly again? Was it just for the sake of a good deal, or are theses goods which they would have otherwise bought regardless of the sale and just saving themselves some extra money. This sale and buying culture is good for the economy and the shops. Though i believe there is a deeper underlying problem there. It is good to see consumer confidence though have we got a problem with overspending when in fact the benefits from these goods however big will only last a short while; would it not be better that in fact consumers spent money on paying off debts and larger issues that often pin people down rather a new top despite the one they are wearing fits perfectly well.

I in no way reject the new found consumer confidence or the benefits to the shops or to market confidence, however i just wonder would some of this money be better spent in getting individuals out of there own individual debt seeing as so much money was spent so recently over Christmas.

Have a Happy New Year
To me Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year. Though what i do love is the music. Musically almost anything is allowed during Christmas regardless of genre as long as it has sleigh bells in the back ground all of a sudden it is a hit. For me though Christmas is so much more than tacky pop songs. As a singer Christmas does often feel slightly repetitive with certain repeated carols of 'O Come all ye Faithful' and 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing" there are a few for me that are traditional yet spark something special into the atmosphere.
So firstly the Carol 'God Bless ye Merry Gentleman' though often ruined and sung in some strange manners when sung well harmonic structure brings out something special in all those around, the lyrics often are often just sung but people sometime truly begin to believe in them and brings people together.

Secondly 'O come, O come, Emmanuel" This truly gives a both soft and victories sound. It begins so softly and often a chilling sound though the refrain is very majestic, and when sung in unison with the congregation creates often a vibrant sound of unity amongst those who don't even know each other.

Finally my last traditional Carol. This one i recently sung the solo for at my schools carol service. I attend an independent school in Buckingham and joined this year in the lower sixth. Though used to often performing this felt more important than others, nerves started to settle in knowing that many people there would judge me on the basis of this performance. Once more i had only recently been given the music and never had heard the piece before. So i wish to recommend others to listen to this stunning piece of music. 'Three kings from Persian lands afar' though not difficult to sing the solo on its on when with a choir it is important to try and create the right atmosphere to be distinct but also not offence against the texture of the choir. So i would recommend having a listen, to some performances on youtube or some other media site and listen to it and comment here and tell me what you think of not just this piece but the others as well.

Have a good Christmas and have a listen to some of these pieces of music.
P.S I'm sure you would be happy to know the performance went really well.
I think it is only right to say what it entails. Well as i couldn't decide between two of my favourite topics music and current affairs i decided to write on both and possibly every now and them combining them. For me personally i am a big fan of slow jazz and classical music, and regardless of musical tastes it is apparent to each and everyone music has its own importance and somehow can truly reach into peoples feelings and thoughts.
